The Refined Single-Kernel Moisture Meter

The PQ510 was the second generation of Kett’s desktop single-kernel moisture meter, building on the PQ500 with expanded rice and barley calibration coverage in the same proven desktop chassis. Kernels were tested one at a time using DC resistance measurement, with the average moisture, kernel count, and a 21-segment LED histogram showing the distribution across the sample. Rice mills, grain processors, and harvest operations used the PQ510 to detect uneven drying, time harvest windows, and verify lot consistency in ways an average-only meter could not support.

What the PQ510 Did

• Per-kernel resistance measurement: Each kernel was fed through internal rollers, crushed, and measured by DC resistance. Sample sizes were user-selectable from 10 to 1,000 kernels.
• LED histogram display: The 21-segment LED bar showed frequency distribution with color coding to highlight where the bulk of the sample sat across the measurement range.
• Six application calibrations: Paddy rice, brown rice, polished rice, wheat, barley, and naked barley. Measurement range of 10–40% covered the practical span for those commodities.
• Documentation via thermal printer: The optional printer captured date, time, grain type, kernel count, average, standard deviation, histogram, and individual kernel moisture values for each measurement.

Why the PQ520 Replaced the PQ510

The PQ520 keeps the single-kernel measurement principle the PQ500 and PQ510 established and rebuilds the instrument around a new chassis and updated electronics. Throughput is up to roughly 150 kernels per minute. The display is a fluorescent digital panel that shows grain type, average moisture, kernel count, time, and the full moisture distribution histogram on one screen rather than a 4-digit LED with a separate LED bar. Power is universal AC 100–240V rather than fixed 100V. Communications include USB for direct PC data capture alongside RS-232C for the optional thermal printer. Calibration coverage expands significantly on the PQ-5205 configuration, with the full rice variety set (long and short grain milled, brown, paddy, jasmine, parboiled, sticky) plus wheat and barley.
