Description
When the Average Moisture Hides What Matters
The number on a typical moisture meter is a sample average. That number tells you nothing about whether moisture is evenly distributed across the lot or spread across a wide range that signals uneven drying, mixed harvest timing, or blending problems. The PQ520 measures kernels one at a time and reports both the average and the full moisture distribution, giving rice mills, grain processors, and harvest operations the information average-only meters cannot provide.
Solving the Distribution Problem
- Uneven drying goes undetected with average readings: A sample that averages 14% can hide kernels at 11% and 17%. The PQ520 builds a histogram showing exactly where the moisture sits across the sample, so dryer settings can be adjusted before downstream quality problems appear.
- Harvest timing decisions need distribution data: A narrow moisture distribution across a plot signals an optimal harvest window. A wide distribution means uneven ripeness and a harvest decision that will cost yield, quality, or both. Single-kernel measurement makes that call defensible.
- Lot consistency verification at receiving: When a lot arrives, an average reading confirms a number, but distribution data confirms the lot is what it claims to be. Mixed-lot blending, uneven storage, and supplier variation all show up in the histogram.
- Per-kernel data, not just statistics: Beyond the histogram, the PQ520 reports kernel count, average, standard deviation, and the individual moisture value of every kernel measured. The full data set transfers to a PC via USB with the optional data logger software.
Built for Sustained Measurement Campaigns
The PQ520 is a desktop instrument designed for repeated use in a QC area, lab bench, or mill office rather than spot-check field work. Sample sizes from 10 to 1,000 kernels are user-selectable, throughput runs at roughly 150 kernels per minute, and the large disposal tray and side-access cleaning door keep the workflow moving across long measurement sessions. Automatic temperature compensation keeps readings consistent across the operating range, and the fluorescent display reads cleanly under typical facility lighting. Calibrations are application-specific and shipped per the variant ordered — see the calibration list for the full set of available rice varieties, wheat, and barley. The PQ520 is backed by a One Year Total Care warranty covering parts, labor, and specification compliance, with maintenance agreements available for ongoing calibration verification.
Need a fast average reading in the field instead of a full distribution? The PM450 Instant Grain and Seed Moisture Meter reports an average sample moisture in seconds from a 240ml sample, handheld and battery-powered.
Need this measurement automated on the production line? The RX-Series Inline Single Kernel Moisture Sensors bring the same single-kernel measurement principle to installed grain handling systems with continuous, unattended operation, PC software, and cloud data management.
