The Desktop Single-Kernel Moisture Meter for Corn

The PQ100 was Kett’s dedicated corn moisture meter using single-kernel measurement. Rather than reporting an average across a sample, the PQ100 tested each kernel individually using DC resistance, computed average and standard deviation across the batch, and printed a histogram showing how moisture was distributed across the sample. For corn processors and grain operations, this was a way to see uneven drying and lot variation at the per-kernel level rather than just the bulk average.

What the PQ100 Did

• Per-kernel DC resistance measurement: Each kernel was fed through internal rollers, crushed, and measured by DC resistance. Sample sizes were user-selectable from 11 to 599 kernels, at approximately 100 kernels per minute.
• Corn application focus: Factory calibration was specific to corn, with a measurement range of 9 to 40% at standard room temperature.
• Two-piece design with handheld controller: The main measurement body housed the hopper, roller mechanism, and temperature sensor. A separate handheld controller with LED display, keypad, and integrated thermal printer connected via DC power and signal cord, giving the operator flexibility to position the controls separately from the measurement unit.
• Manual bias adjustment: A ±9.9% bias adjustment let operators correct readings against a reference standard, a feature later Kett single-kernel meters automated through improved temperature compensation.
• Documentation built in: The integrated thermal printer captured grain type, kernel count, average, unbiased variance, standard deviation, body temperature, histogram, and individual kernel values for every measurement.

No Direct Replacement in the Current Kett Lineup

The PQ100 has no direct desktop replacement currently in production. Kett’s current single-kernel measurement option is the RX series, which uses the same single-kernel resistance principle but is designed for installation in grain handling systems rather than desktop operation. For corn processors who specifically need a desktop single-kernel meter, the RX series is a different form factor and workflow.
