Kett introduces the LU200, an ultrasonic thickness gauge to provide non-destructive measurement of coatings on polymer, organic, and thin metallic substrates. Enhancing the extensive line of Kett coating thickness gauges, the LU200 uses innovative sensor technology to provide unsurpassed accuracy in a simple-to-use, handheld device.

Different materials absorb and reflect sound waves in unique relationships. Several samples of known coating thicknesses are tested with the LU200 and the reflectance measured. The system calculates the relationship between the reflected sound and the coating thickness and stores the calibration in non-volatile memory. Once calibrated, the LU200 will provide instant measurement on test samples. Data is displayed on the LCD and may be stored in memory. Test results may be transmitted to a printer or PC throught the RS232 connection.

Unlike eddy current and magnetic inductance methods, the LU200 doesn’t require a metal substrate to measure the coating. Multi-layer polymers, coated glass, ceramics, and other organics can be readily tested by selecting the appropriate calibration.

"Automobile, electronics, and appliance manufacturers have been unhappy with current time-consuming, destructive methods," said John Bogart of Kett U.S. "The LU200 provides customers with the ability to practice statistical process control, where previously they limited testing due to the cost of the parts destroyed. Product quality can now be improved while reducing production costs because tolerances are dramatically reduced.

Over fifty years of research and development have made Kett a worldwide industry leader in the manufacture of testing equipment. Other products include NIR composition analyzers, handheld and desktop NIR moisture meters, IR moisture balances, wood, paper and agricultural meters, coating thickness testers and surface property analyzers.
